HelmDMS vs DX1 — Built for Boats, Not Repurposed from Powersports

An honest comparison for marine dealers. DX1 launched in marine in 2013 — today its homepage markets to powersports and golf-car dealers only. Here's where that leaves a boat shop.

Bottom line

DX1 is a capable, OEM-certified DMS — but its certifications (Polaris, BRP, Yamaha-Motor, Harley-Davidson, Honda, Kawasaki, KTM, Husqvarna) are all powersports, and marine prospects are now routed to its sibling product ZiiDMS. HelmDMS is purpose-built for marine, integrates the distributors a boat-parts counter actually calls (Seawide, Land 'N' Sea, CED Marine, Wintron, Donovan), and runs $499/mo flat vs DX1's reported $1,200+/mo bundle.

Where DX1 wins

  • OEM-certified for powersports. If you sell Polaris, BRP, Yamaha-Motor, Harley-Davidson, Honda, Kawasaki, KTM, or Husqvarna, DX1's certifications and EDI connections are real and valuable.
  • Mature platform. Shipping since 2013, large customer base in powersports, bundled website + marketing + DMS.
  • Bundled marketing. Lead capture, paid-search management, and website are sold as a single stack.
  • Franchise-dealer scale. Built for the floor-plan, recall, and multi-OEM-compliance workload of a franchised powersports dealer.

Where HelmDMS wins

  • Marine is the product, not a former vertical. Hull IDs, boat-motor-trailer serialization, dockage notes, marine-specific deal docs — native, not bolted on.
  • Marine supplier APIs. Seawide, Land 'N' Sea, CED Marine, Wintron, Donovan — live price/stock and one-click PO. DX1's distributor list is WPS / Turn 14 / powersports.
  • Boats.com / YachtWorld / Boat Trader syndication included. Boat Push ships in the box.
  • SMS, voice, caller ID, AI invoice scan included. No partner bolt-ons, no separate billing.
  • $499/mo flat, month-to-month. Roughly 2.4× cheaper than DX1's bundled platform, no multi-year lock-in.
  • Migration done for you. Founding-dealer pricing includes white-glove migration from DX1 (or ZiiDMS).

DX1 started in marine and walked away

Boats Group (then Dominion Marine Media) launched DX1 at MDCE in November 2013 specifically "for marine dealers." Sometime after the Boats Group ownership transactions, DX1 was spun out to Recreational Dealer Solutions, LLC (RDS), which also owns ZiiDMS and Traffic Log Pro. Today the DX1 homepage describes itself as the "all-in-1 powersports dealership management solution"; marine isn't listed under industries served. Marine dealers calling RDS are routed to ZiiDMS — a separate product, separate roadmap.

The certifications tell you who DX1 is built for

DX1 is the Polaris-preferred and BRP-approved DMS with integrations to Yamaha-Motor, Honda Powersports, Harley-Davidson, Kawasaki, KTM, Husqvarna, and WPS (see the DX1 OEM list). Every one is a powersports brand. There is no Mercury, Yamaha-Marine, Suzuki-Marine, Volvo Penta, Honda-Marine, or Sea-Doo-as-boat workflow. A boat dealer running DX1 is using a system optimized for someone else's data model.

The supplier story is the daily-pain story

DX1's parts management is built around powersports distributors like WPS and Turn 14. HelmDMS hits the marine distributors your counter team actually calls — Seawide, Land 'N' Sea, CED Marine, Wintron, Donovan — with live price and stock and one-click PO submission. That's a 20–40 min/day saving DX1 simply can't deliver in marine.

The price gap is real

Public third-party listings put DX1 at roughly $1,200/mo starting for the bundled platform; HelmDMS is $499/mo flat with unlimited users and includes the website, SMS / voice / caller ID, ExoInvoice (25 free parses), syndication to Boats.com / YachtWorld / Boat Trader, and white-glove migration. For a single-rooftop marine dealer, that's $8,400+/yr saved before you count the bolt-ons DX1 charges separately. RDS doesn't publish DX1 pricing on dx1app.com, so always confirm current numbers with the vendor.

Independent marine dealers shouldn't pay franchise-powersports prices

DX1's revenue model assumes a Polaris / BRP / HD-franchised dealer with the floor-plan financing, recall reimbursement flow, and multi-OEM compliance burden that justifies a $1,200+/mo platform. An independent marine shop selling Yamaha outboards, a few brands of boats, and rigging parts doesn't have that burden — and shouldn't subsidize it.

Migration from DX1 (or ZiiDMS) to HelmDMS

For founding dealers, we handle migration. We pull customers, units (boats, motors, trailers), parts, vendors, and open work orders from DX1 (or ZiiDMS) and import them. You don't touch a CSV. Plan for 2–3 weeks from signed agreement to first live transaction.

One note we're upfront about: pricing claims for any DMS shift over time, and DX1's public pricing in particular is third-party-sourced because RDS doesn't publish it. The numbers above reflect listing data as of early 2026. Confirm with each vendor before you commit.

FAQ

Is DX1 discontinued for marine?

No — accurate framing is "de-emphasized." DX1's homepage today markets to powersports and golf-car dealers only. RDS (DX1's owner) routes marine prospects to its sibling product ZiiDMS. Existing marine customers on DX1 aren't being shut off, but the product isn't being positioned, certified, or sold into marine anymore.

Can HelmDMS pull data out of DX1?

Yes. We've migrated dealers off OEM-certified DMSs before. DX1 provides data exports as part of dealer offboarding; we map customers, units, parts, vendors, and open work orders into HelmDMS as part of the founding-dealer onboarding.

We sell powersports AND boats. Should we still look at HelmDMS?

If powersports is the bigger book and you need Polaris/BRP/HD EDI, DX1 is the more obvious fit on the powersports side. If marine is the bigger book — or you're tired of running marine through a powersports-shaped system — HelmDMS is built for boats first and will feel different from day one. Talk to us; we'll tell you straight.

What if I'm already on ZiiDMS?

Same answer — we'll migrate you. ZiiDMS is RDS's marine-targeted product, but it shares ownership and roadmap priorities with DX1 and Traffic Log Pro. Founding-dealer migration covers ZiiDMS too.
